Community Schools Team (CST) Programmer – Food & Nutrition
An exciting opportunity to support vulnerable elementary and secondary students after school with the Vancouver Board of Education
The Vancouver Board of Education is currently seeking a Part-Time Programmer to support elementary and secondary students during out of school time (OST) in schools located in Renfrew-Collingwood. Our large, urban and multicultural school district provides programs to over 50,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and over 2,000 adults in adult education programs. Serving our diverse district in 110 facility sites, our programs and services are designed to address both complex challenges and extraordinary opportunities.
Position Overview:
As a Programmer with the Windermere Community Schools Team, you will work collaboratively to prepare elementary cooking programs run by CST Program Leader staff and secondary student volunteers. You will facilitate at least one of these cooking programs per term. With support from the Community Schools Coordinator and community partners, you will have direction over recipe selection, lesson planning, material and ingredient purchasing and preparation for a minimum of six cooking programs per term. In this role, you will be responsible for working with school staff to recruit and build strong relationships with youth. Working within a budget, you will purchase cooking equipment and ingredients, and maintain a cleanly and food safe environment. You will also serve as an important ambassador for the Community Schools Team and will ensure that our programming, training, and events are always held to the highest standard of quality.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the overall implementation of Windermere Community Programs (WCP), particularly in WCP cooking programs
- Support the work of, and collaborate with, the CST Coordinator, Programmers and other Program Leaders to ensure smooth implementation and operations
- Plan for, and purchase cooking program supplies in accordance with a budget determined with your supervisor and ensure supplies are available for student leaders for their weekly programs, including menu planning, recipe selection, grocery shopping, and food preparation
- Plan and purchase healthy snack for all students in programs as needed
- Supervise and mentor Youth Leaders and children registered in out of school time programs
- Provide on-site supervision ensuring programming is operating at the highest standard of quality (i.e., all safety protocols are adhered to, programs are engaging and inclusive, program goals are met, food safe requirements are followed, individual dietary restrictions and allergies are maintained etc.)
- Participate in the following (1 x per term): creation and distribution of program brochures, in- school promotions, in-school registrations and registration lists
- Participate in weekly staff meetings and regular staff training
- Assist organizing the year end volunteer appreciation event, working with other CST staff and community service providers
- Support WCP Training as needed, possibly hosting a workshop session
- Follow VSB and CST policy relating to risk management, emergency preparedness, incident reporting, and interacting with children and youth.
- Act as a professional representative of the VSB during work hours
- Other duties as assigned by CST Coordinator
Hours and Remuneration:
Up to 20 hours per week. Option to combine with another Windermere CST Programmer (Get REAL) position
- As agreed upon between Programmer and Coordinator, with input from other Programmer(s) in regard to school site-specific schedules.
- The work term is September through June of each school year (exact dates TBD each term by Coordinator). The job is approximately 20 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 10am-5pm. This position requires travel to a variety of sites within the neighbourhood on a regular basis. Please note statutory holidays, district closure days, and professional development days are non-working days (unless otherwise agreed upon between Programmer and Coordinator).
- The position offers an hourly wage of $20 - $25 per hour (plus 10.67% in lieu of benefits) depending on experience.
Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in any of the following areas: Nutrition, Land & Food Systems, Dietetics, Child and Youth Care, Recreation Leadership, Human Kinetics, Community Development, Social Work or Social Sciences, Education and/or equivalent work experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience working with children and youth in a recreational setting
- Current first aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain
- Basic cooking skills and a passion for food systems, nutrition education, and programming;
- Strong organizational and group leadership skills;
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve and multitask;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Positive attitude and strong understanding and background in youth engagement programming;
- Food Safe certification or willingness to obtain; and
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
- HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development and/or QUEST2 certification or willingness to obtain
- The successful candidate will be required to complete and pass a criminal record check (cost $28).
