This temporary contract job is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills in assisting our main client, a treatment centre in Abbotsford, update their Kitchen policy and procedure, menu plan and set up systems that are easily followed by the staff. You will be working for our organization, while working for the client. There are possibilities beyond the scope of work included here; however, we will start with a short-term contract in order to evaluate.
Prepares kitchen policy and procedure, sets up systems, may supervise Cooks and/or food service workers. Plans and develops menus and recipes, including special diets, in consultation with contracted nutritionist. Purchases food and other kitchen supplies for location. Directs assigned clients/volunteers in their kitchen/dining room duties. Ensures kitchen/dining room operates within assigned budget.
WORK PERFORMED
- Responsible for the development, planning and rotation of menus and recipes including special diets such as diabetic, lactose intolerant, low fat, gluten-free and vegetarian. Review and develop menus and recipes with a contracted registered nutritionist as needed with an eye on variety and seasonal availability of goods
- Modifies and adjusts established menus as necessary
- Prepares sitewide kitchen policies and procedures that can be adapted for each site, as required
- Performs administrative duties such as estimating food and supply requirements based on menus and minimum/maximum inventory levels
- May place or direct purchase orders with external suppliers, receiving supplies, checking invoices against orders and goods received, storing and distributing supplies, and contacting suppliers to obtain and provide information and to investigate invoice anomalies and damaged shipments
- May shops for food items and monitors kitchen expenditures
- Performs inventory control duties such as storing and rotating food and supplies
- Completes and maintains any records and documentation that relates to menus, recipes and records of client preferences, allergies and special dietary needs. Maintain records and documents, menu selections and rotations according to Community Care Licensing standards
- Supervises staff by performing duties such as assigning work, providing feedback and evaluation, determining staffing requirements, orienting new staff, and maintaining timekeeping and attendance records. Resolves staffing problems, including calling in staff to ensure appropriate staffing levels
- Provides direction to clients and/or volunteers assigned to kitchen/dining room duties, and ensures that they complete their tasks according to their job descriptions. Monitors and assists as required
- May prepare, cook and serve meals and snacks according to rotating established menus and recipes, by performing duties such as planning food preparation and cooking schedules, cooking, roasting, grilling, baking, testing for palatability and carving
- May performs cleaning duties such as cleaning food preparation equipment, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning sinks and counters, cleaning kitchen and storage areas such as walls, ovens and freezers, and removing garbage
- Monitors functioning of equipment and reports any malfunctions and maintenance and repair requirements to the Maintenance Supervisor
- Consults with the Manager of Administration and Operations when kitchen/dining room equipment needs to be replaced
- Reports any concerns regarding clients/volunteers to the appropriate personnel
- Performs other related duties as assigned

- Minimum two (2) years related experience
- Food Safe Level 1
- Basic First Aid – CPR
- Valid BC driver’s license
- Knowledge of Community Care Licensing Regulations as they related to food services in institutional kitchen/dining rooms
- Diploma from an accredited cooking school and/or Red Seal
