Celiac disease (CeD) is an autoimmune genetic condition primarily affecting the small bowel, and precipitated by exposure to dietary gluten. The only available treatment for CeD is to adhere to a life-long strict gluten-free diet (GFD). Although GFD is crucial for disease control, it has been associated with nutritional deficiencies. This webinar will provide the evidence on the most common nutritional deficiencies in CeD and other gluten related disorders.
Learning Objectives:
In this session, attendees will learn:
1- Clinical and nutritional management of pediatric and adult patients with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity
2- Differences in recommendation of gluten free diet for patients with celiac and gluten sensitivity
About the Speakers:
Dr. Maria Ines Pinto-Sanchez obtained her MD certification in 2002, and completed her Gastroenterology training in 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She joined the Farncombe Institute at McMaster in 2010 as clinical research fellow and obtained Master in Science degree in 2014. She completed a Clinical Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellow in 2017 in the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University and has obtained Clinician Nutrition Specialist Certification from the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC).Dr. Pinto-Sanchez is currently an active medical staff at the Gastroenterology Division at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences where she provides consultation services in the area of gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is the director of the Celiac Clinic at McMaster University. Her clinical and research interest include the diagnosis and treatment of different gastrointestinal conditions with focus on celiac disease and gluten related disorders. She has received different awards and has over 50 publications, most in high impact journals.
Joy Hutchinson is a Registered Dietitian with a Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences, which she obtained in 2019 from the University of Toronto. Her Master’s thesis work focused on assessing the association between nutritional adequacy and food security status among Canadians. She has received numerous awards, including a Canada Graduate Scholarship- Masters through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Joy has presented her research at a number of academic conferences and has published her research in peer-reviewed journals. Currently, she works as a Registered Dietitian in the Celiac Clinic at McMaster University, providing outpatient care and conducting several research projects.
