The latest version of Canada’s Food Guide, released in 2019, for the
first time listed a nutrient, ‘protein’ as a food group. The ‘protein
foods’ group was created by combining meat and alternatives with milk
and alternatives, with an emphasis on including more plant based
protein sources. While the depiction of the food guide as a simple
plate model has advantages in messaging, this has also created some
concerns with respect to what are considered protein foods, and why do
we need them.
The goal of this presentation will be to describe protein foods with
examples, and why protein is important in the context of healthy
individuals across different life stages, including the vulnerable
groups of children and elderly.
